Mt. Olive Lutheran Church believes, teaches and confesses the historic Christian faith as it has been passed down from the apostles.
Who Is God?
We believe in One God, the Triune God, three Persons in one God: the Father, Creator of all that exists; the Son, who became flesh being born of the Virgin Mary, in order to win salvation for us by suffering and dying on the cross and then being raised to life everlasting, who ascended into heaven and will return on the Last Day to judge the living and the dead; the Holy Spirit, who calls, gathers, and enlightens us through the Word of God and joins us to Jesus Christ. We believe that the Triune God is divine mystery: three Persons in one substance of God.
Justification
All people are sinners according to God’s Word. They are made right only through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Sinners receive the merits of Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection through faith, which is a gift of the Holy Spirit.
The Creeds of the Church
We confess the truth of the Christian faith as stated in the three Creeds of the Christian Church: The Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds.
Holy Scripture and What Lutherans Believe
We believe that Holy Scripture is the true Word of God and the only teaching by which all other teachings are to be judged. We believe that the Christian faith as taught in Holy Scripture is truly stated in the Lutheran Confessions contained in the Book of Concord of 1580. These confessional statements may be viewed at bookofconcord.org.
Holy Baptism
We believe that, in Holy Baptism, our sins are forgiven, we are delivered from death and the devil, and that, by the Holy Spirit through Jesus, we are given eternal salvation.
We believe that babies should be baptized since, according to Scripture, they are sinful and included in Jesus’ words, “All nations,” or all people (Matthew 28), and Simon Peter’s words, “The promise is for you and for your children” (Acts 2).
Confession and Forgiveness
We believe that, as Jesus taught His disciples in John 20, as the Pastor pronounces forgiveness of sins, our sins are forgiven before God in heaven.
The Lord’s Supper
We believe that the body and blood of Jesus Christ which was crucified, died, raised, and ascended, are truly and inexplicably present in the Lord’s Supper, giving us Christians His body and blood under bread and wine.
